Epic loses appeal over issues it has with Apple's App Store

The Apple vs Epic lawsuit saga hit a new milestone yesterday, with the appeals court not making any changes to the previous court's decision. If you've forgotten, the only thing the court found against Apple is to "allow developers to place links inside their apps so users could make purchases outside the App Store" - which will have to happen soon, unless Epic decide to appeal this decision to the US Supreme Court. No word if they'll actually do it, let alone if the Supreme Court would bother hearing it. Epic and Apple still have a pending case in Australia, which is due to be heard in the Federal Court in 2024.

1Password to add telemetry to everyone's accounts unless you opt-out

Popular password manager 1Password announced they're testing a "new, privacy-preserving in-app telemetry system" that will be turned on for all accounts eventually, with the onus on the customer to opt-out if they don't want to. Their justification for adding it after all these years is that "if we're going to keep improving 1Password, we can no longer rely on our own usage and your direct feedback alone". I still trust 1Password not to do a shit job of this so I'll keep using 1Password, but I wonder what my limit would be to actually get me to move to a different password manager?

Something I Saw On The Internet

Australian study reports that "unsupportive or hostile culture" at work turns women off STEM jobs

Yet another study has shown "an increase in women's participation in STEM education in schools and though into undergraduate education" but "gains from there into graduate education, career, and senior career, however, have been modest". The University of South Australia's study reckons "unsupportive or hostile culture was consistently mentioned during the think tanks as a major barrier to women in the workplace and was often reported as a cause for women leaving a job" and recommends "policies to promote workplace flexibility for all employees regardless of gender, in part to encourage greater participation in unpaid care work by men – which in itself would help shift the dial on societal stereotypes and messaging". Common sense stuff, time for management to get their shit together.
