Aussie car lobby & fossil fuel lobby teamed up to weaken vehicle emissions laws

A report from Influence Map has revealed how the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has undermined attempts to introduce vehicle emissions standards in Australia. From over 500 pages of freedom of information requests, the report outlines how the FCAI met with government and worked with fossil fuel lobbyists to introduce weak and useless emissions standards on purpose, so that Australia remains a market where they can sell old tech at a premium price. Apparently Hyundai and Toyota were the main FCAI members pushing for weak standards, whereas Tesla, Volvo and Volkswagen pushed for stronger ones.

Arm has new CPU cores that are faster but use less power

Arm has a new set of Cortex-A and Cortex-X series CPU cores that will be used by many mobile devices that aren't made by Apple. I'm not gonna go into too much detail here as a lot of it is over my head and I have a yet another motherfucking cold (at least it's not COVID) and cannot be fucked. All you gotta know is that Arm has made a new range of faster, better, lower power consumption, CPU cores that vendors like Mediatek and Qualcomm will implement in their SoCs that'll then get shoved into mobile devices. They might start popping up early next year.

Lawyer uses ChatGPT, doesn't double check what it's doing, is now in trouble

Copying this direct from Simon Willison's blog because I don't feel well: "A lawyer asked ChatGPT for examples of cases that supported an argument they were trying to make. ChatGPT, as it often does, hallucinated wildly—it invented several supporting cases out of thin air. When the lawyer was asked to provide copies of the cases in question, they turned to ChatGPT for help again—and it invented full details of those cases, which they duly screenshotted and copied into their legal filings. At some point, they asked ChatGPT to confirm that the cases were real... and ChatGPT said that they were. They included screenshots of this in another filing. The judge is furious. Many of the parties involved are about to have a very bad time". Thank you Simon.

A nice chart of GPU benchmarks that makes it easy to pick a card that meets your needs

In the market for a new GPU? Tom's Hardware has a very useful GPU benchmark hierarchy that's regularly updated. It shows you in raw numbers how fast a GPU is in games at various resolutions so you can see how the various generations of GPUs compare. It's super handy if you whip up a quick spreadsheet and divide the street prices from Facebook or whatever for the new GPUs by the frames per second at your preferred resolution so you can get the best bang for buck GPU that'll do, for example, 1080p Ultra at a minimum of 60fps.
