The News

10 days later & the fire's still burning at Linus Tech Tips

In a new apology video titled "Here's the plan" Linus Media Group (LMG) front man Linus Sebastian outlines what they're doing to right the ship amidst recent controversy. The video talks about process improvements and the scraping of LMGs self-imposed video release pressure, hopefully decreasing major inaccuracies. He fails to directly address any of the sexual harassment allegations, instead focusing on the company's open-door policy, HR team and employee benefits. He even quotes the company's stellar staff retention rates, but then screws the pooch telling us all that their "turnover may rise" and that employees shouldn't freak out. Probably the worst thing he could've said in my opinion. Now his employee's are shitting themselves too.

Dropbox is removing its unlimited storage tier

Yet another thing we can blame crypto-bros for. Dropbox have advised they're canning their US$24/m "as much as you need" storage tier for businesses because a minority (crypto & Chia miners) that are openly abusing it. Effective immediately new business customers will be limited to 15TB for those with 3 people or less and gain an additional 5TB per user beyond that. Plans will top out at 1,000TB and not extend beyond that. Current customers have until November 1st before the new limits are imposed and those with 35TB or more per user can contact Dropbox to discuss migration techniques.

BlackBerry to be acquired by Veritas Capital

Did you know BlackBerry was still a thing? I certainly didn't. They stopped making phones back in 2016 and have since reinvented themselves operating two businesses, one in cybersecurity software and the other in IoT products. This has caught the eye of equity bros Veritas Capital, who are rumoured to have placed a bid to purchase the company in full. They may have some competition though, Blackberry are reportedly courting other suitors and have already agreed to sell their mobile device patents to Malikie Innovations Limited for US$900m. As an aside, Blackberry the movie, which was recently playing at MIFF, is and incredible dramatised look at the company's rise & fall that I highly recommend you watch.

Something I Saw On The Internet

Come with me down the printer ink rabbit hole

Fstoppers, the camera & photography review blog have put out a slightly off-topic video for them focused on printer ink cartridges. There's the usual "ink cartridges are a rip off" paraphernalia in there, but then they show all of these interesting ways printers waste ink when they're not printing or performing other operations like just being turned on! Thankfully they also show you how to get around some of the ridiculous limits enforced on the Canon Pixma printer they're using to test. The result is one of the most cost effective printing solutions on the market today.
